Sophie and Oliver were among the most popular names for newborns published in the Otago Daily Times' births columns last year.
Sophie was the most popular for girls, appearing 15 times, and Oliver, with nine entries, was the sixth most popular for boys.
Miss Kelly, of Mosgiel, said it was nice to see so many other parents had such good taste.
She and partner Mark Whyte did not want a ''fad'' name - they picked names they liked.
Liam (17 entries) was the most popular name for boys, followed by James (16), Charlie (11), Max (10) and William (10).
Charlotte (11 entries) was the second most popular name for girls, followed by Isabella and Olivia (10 each).
Southerners seemed to stick to the names they knew: seven of the top boys' and girls' names were in New Zealand's top 10 the year before.
Sophie (No 1), Ruby (2nd), Olivia (3rd), Isabella (4th), Charlotte (7th), Lily (8th), and Amelia (10th) were among the top 10 for New Zealand girls in 2009.
Jack (No 1), Oliver (2nd), James (3rd), William (5th), Samuel (6th), Liam and Benjamin (equal 7th) were among the top 10 for newborn boys.
The list from last year's Otago Daily Times also shows how much - or how little - preferences changed over the decade.
Liam, Jack, Samuel, James, Benjamin and Thomas were in the New Zealand top 10 in 2000, but Joshua, Matthew and Jacob were outside the 10 most popular in the newspaper last year.
Olivia, Hannah, Sophie and Samantha were also among the top 10 in 2000, but Jessica, Georgina, Grace, Emma, Emily and Sarah did not make the local top 10 for 2010.
Miss Kelly said it was interesting to see how many children shared the same name, but that every parent knew the similarities ended there.
Oliver and Sophie were born five minutes apart on January 31, but even twins with popular names were full of their own surprises.
