The swim was cancelled but everyone still got thoroughly wet at the Weet-Bix tryathlon at a sodden Memorial Park in Mosgiel yesterday.

About 1000 children aged from 7 to 15 turned up despite the pouring rain yesterday, and all received a medal for their efforts.

The swimming leg was dropped, turning the tryathlon into a duathlon, and competitors ran about 400m, cycled about 4km, then finished with another run of 1.2km.

Series organiser Terry Sheldrake said he could recall only one other event as wet as yesterday's event in Mosgiel.

Having organised 65 tryathlons around the country, only the North Shore event two years ago had been as wet as yesterday's, he said.

There was never an intention to cancel the event after all the effort the kids had gone to, and another tryathlon was scheduled for Christchurch next week, Mr Sheldrake said.

Results were not kept as the emphasis was on participation.
