A mass food fight based on a Spanish festival is being organised for a North Dunedin street tomorrow, a social networking internet site says.
More than 550 people have signed up on Facebook to the Leith Street North Tomatina event, which will be based on the La Tomatina festival held in Bunol, Spain, each August.
Participants at the Spanish festival throw ripe tomatoes at each other and the Dunedin event, according to Facebook, promises to "show the Spanish how we really do it".
"The key is to get as many tomatoes as we can, but if that proves too much, any sort of fruit or vegetable will be acceptable . . . no rocks [though] . . . cause they ain't fruit!"Attempts to contact organisers of the event were unsuccessful.
Senior Sergeant Gavin Briggs, of North Dunedin, said if the event went ahead police would prefer it to be held in a more appropriate area, away from the public eye.
Police would regularly patrol the area and people could face disorderly behaviour charges if the event got out of control, he said.
Dunedin City Council spokesman Rodney Bryant said participants "should have better things to do with their money" as tomatoes were out of season.
