The annual toga party kicked off tonight, with hundreds of chanting toga-clad first-year university students pelted by eggs and water balloons.

Eight young men with slingshots took aim at the event held at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.

One person was chased down Castle St and held on the ground by Otago University officials.

Some students were seen urinating and vomiting in the trees.
