A vegetation fire sent smoke and ash billowing from a North Dunedin property this afternoon.
The fire in the backyard of a property in Craigleith St, Northeast Valley, was quickly contained by firefighters after 5pm today.
Willowbank station officer Mark Townsend said the fire spread to a large toetoe bush and sent out a significant amount of smoke.
"It did look quite impressive," Mr Townsend said.
It was accidentally lit by the occupants of the house.
The fire was a "timely reminder" that conditions in Dunedin were dry and outdoor fires were prohibited.
