The Dunedin Town Hall was the place to be last night, to hear Otago secondary school musicians perform works by composers ranging from Dvorak and Handel to Danny Elfman and Henry Mancini.
More than 700 choral and orchestral musicians from 17 secondary schools around Otago crowded on to the stage and stall area for the 41st Otago Secondary Schools' Music Festival.
The concert was directed by 10 conductors, including Kaikorai Valley College head of music Kathy Thompson.
While the sound of the massive orchestra and choir performing was thrilling, she said the enthusiasm of the musicians engaging with the music, and each other, was just as exciting.
"It's very rewarding to draw expression from the musicians with the stick."
