The tireless work of three Otago volunteers was recognised when they became members of the Order of St John this month.
They are Maryn Cameron, of Lawrence, and Ruth Craigie and Veronica Richardson, of Dunedin.
Southern region general manager Gary Williams said he was pleased with the announcement.
"Their work is often done without recognition and certainly with a great deal of humility, having the community's interests at heart," he said.
Mrs Cameron had been a member of the Lawrence area committee for the past six years, the most recent three as chairman.
She had overseen the redevelopment of the local ambulance station, the upgrading of training equipment and the introduction of the Caring Caller programme.
Mrs Craigie led the team of Dunedin volunteers, giving many hours to provide first aid support at community and sporting events.
Mrs Richardson joined the community services arm in 1985 before moving on to the casualty simulation group.
This group was used by the police, fire service, Red Cross and many private organisations for training exercises, which Mrs Richardson co-ordinated, Mr Williams said.
A ceremony for them and others honoured by St John will be held next year.
