Three charged with theft

A trio of young Dunedin men will appear in court today charged with stealing property from a parked vehicle during the weekend.

The accused, aged 18, 19 and 20, were caught stealing building supplies and equipment from a Subaru in a car park near the Dunedin Railway Station about 4.15am yesterday.

A man noticed the youths acting suspiciously and contacted Dunedin police.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said their arrest was because of a "great combination" of good police work and help from the public.

"That's what it takes to get offenders caught, a little bit of a heads-up from a member of the public and good policing. When that comes together great things happen," he said.

Snr Sgt Benn said police would investigate whether the accused had anything to do with the recent spate of thefts from parked vehicles in Dunedin.

"I suspect there could be more charges coming," he said.
