Threats to more schools

Police were kept busy yesterday again responding to threats made against schools.

Threats were made against almost 30 schools yesterday, which followed bomb threats being made against six schools, including Dunedin's Logan Park High School, on Wednesday.

National police would not release the name of any of the 27 schools involved.

However, it is understood at least one Otago school was among those targeted yesterday.

Logan Park High School principal Jane Johnson extended her sympathy to the schools involved, but said Logan Park was not targeted yesterday.

"It seems random,'' she said. "It is a big issue.''

The bomb threat made against the school on Wednesday had been disruptive and followed a similar threat in late January.

Police believed the threats on Wednesday and yesterday originated overseas.

Otago Secondary Principals' Association secretary Gordon Wilson said the ongoing threats were frustrating for schools.

"This clearly will be extremely disruptive for all schools involved,'' he said.

"It seems there are now a large number of schools involved and it seems to be totally random.''

Police yesterday said officers attended all the schools involved and had spoken to school management to decide on the appropriate response.

"Today's calls may be linked to those received yesterday, which initial inquiries indicated have originated overseas,'' police said in a statement yesterday.

"Police are undertaking a number of lines of inquiries to establish the exact origin of these calls.

"We should make it clear that while such calls may display a New Zealand number, they can still be originating from overseas.

"As we stated yesterday, similar incidents have occurred overseas in United States and, more recently, Australia.

"Until police can rule out any actual threat, we must take all these calls seriously and respond accordingly.''

All of the threats so far had been found to be hoaxes, police said.
