Dunedin's newest market opened under cover yesterday.

The inaugural Stadium Market attracted more than 100 stall holders and thousands of shoppers to Forsyth Barr Stadium.

David Humphrey, of the Rotary Club of Dunedin Central, said the market was several years in the planning and was a joint venture with Dunedin Venues Management Ltd.

"This is a great thing for Dunedin, because it has community input and is community orientated."

Some stallholders had been turned down as organisers wanted the market under cover, but this could change during the summer period, he said.

The market included fresh produce, takeaway food, clothing and craft items.

There was also live entertainment and displays by the police and the Fire Service.

Mr Humphrey said entry to the indoor market was free, with 20 Rotarians volunteering to collect a gold coin donation for parking and ensuring the event ran smoothly.

"We had no idea how many people were going to come, but we are really pleased."

Stallholders were pleased with the turnout for the market, which would be held on Sundays between 10am and 2pm.
