The fate of Otago District Health Board chairman Richard Thomson is expected to be known in the next few days.
The deadline for the board to respond to plans by the Minister of Health, Tony Ryall, to remove Mr Thomson expired at 5pm on Monday.
A spokeswoman for Mr Ryall confirmed two responses - one from the board, and one from Mr Thomson - had been received before the deadline.
A decision by the minister is expected in the next few days, she said.
Mr Thomson, who has been under threat of dismissal since he refused to resigned, said he was unsure how the submissions would affect his position.
"I have some skills but being a clairvoyant is not one of them".
"I have made it fairly obvious my expectation is that he will proceed to dismiss me but that remains to be seen. The ball is in his court."
