A limited edition, $5000 vintage steering wheel was stolen from a home in Company Bay - then returned after the thief was caught in the act.
Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said the victim believed the steering wheel was the only one in the country.
The victim caught the alleged offender stealing it from a Raynbird St garage, she said.
"He was caught running across the . . . yard with his stuff.''
The alleged offender then left the victim an apology note.
Also in the alleged offender's possession were cleaning products and 12 kitchen door handles, Snr Sgt Waru said.
• A Samsung tablet and an Apple iPad both worth about $800 were removed from a Middleton Rd, Corstorphine, home on Wednesday.
The burglary happened during daylight hours between 7.50am and 12.45pm.
Snr Sgt Waru said a bedroom window had been "smashed'' to gain entry.
The home owner arrived back to find that a door to the lounge had been opened before discovering the broken window, located in a daughter's bedroom, Snr Sgt Waru said.
Inquiries were continuing.
