Two would-be chair thieves took on the law - and the law won.

Dunedin Crown solicitor Robin Bates was woken by his dog barking shortly after 1am yesterday to discover "two intoxicated students" taking a couple of large recliner sunloungers from his central Dunedin home.

The pyjama-clad Mr Bates decided to chase them in his car, and caught up with the pair a few blocks later.

"When I stopped the car they took off, and I recovered the chairs a short time later."

Mr Bates said he took note of the pair and was likely to recognise them if they ever appeared in the Dunedin District Court.
