Actor and director Ellie Swann has a space in mind in "the super cool Vogel precinct''.
She was not keen to make the address public until there was more certainty, and needed to raise some funds to get started, but hoped to start setting up in the next couple of months.
Ms Swann said she had been involved in theatre since completing a BA in theatre studies at the University of Otago in 2000, and postgraduate study in 2006.
That included time as an actor, director and producer, working at the Globe Theatre in Dunedin.
She said the city needed another theatre because the Globe was there to develop people's interest in theatre, producing its own plays.
Getting a spare space there, or at the Fortune Theatre, could be ``a real issue''.
"It's about cost as well.''
There was plenty of talent in the city, and those people were able to promote events through social media.
"But there's a lack of venues that actually have the space available for casual use.''
Her idea was a not-for-profit theatre with two performance spaces, and seating for about
120.
Ms Swann said she was in the process of setting up a charitable trust, and organising funding.
She planned to discuss the issue with Dunedin City Council heritage policy planner Glen Hazelton this week.
The cost of setting up could be up to $100,000, as the space would require dressing rooms for performers, redevelopment and renovation.
Her plan was to support people who wanted to rent the space with funding applications to pay for it.
Ms Swann said she hoped to be in the space in the next couple of months.
