Crew members on the cruise ship Norwegian Jewel give the lifeboats a run while the ship is berthed at Port Chalmers yesterday.

Under amended regulations of the international convention for the safety of life at sea, such lifeboats must be operated regularly to enhance safety.

The ship, capable of carrying carries nearly 2400 passengers and 1100 crew, arrived at the Beach St berth at 8.28am yesterday and left at 6.51pm, bound for Akaroa.
