The St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool is not being heated effectively or efficiently and its two heat pumps need to be replaced, the Dunedin City Council says.

The council called for tenders for replacements this month.

The pool, heated to 28°C when in use from October to April, was located in a "corrosive environment" and the council said it was looking for a supplier to provide a heat pump system that took this into consideration and had a minimum 10-year lifespan.

The installation was to be done during the off-season while the pool was closed, the council said.

"It is essential that the works are complete, so that the pool can open as planned for the 2024-25 season on October 1."
