Teen biker spurs police chase

The teenage motorcyclist who sparked a police pursuit yesterday afternoon endangered himself and the lives of others, Dunedin police say.

The 19-year-old was spotted by a police patrol after he failed to stop at an intersection on Dalziel Rd at 1.30pm.

His failing to stop for police resulted in a pursuit around the Three Mile Hill Rd area before he was cornered in a car park on Silverstream Valley Rd some 20 minutes later, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

Two cars were involved in the pursuit, with two others used to cordon off the area.

While the speed limit was exceeded by the motorcyclist, it was not overly excessive because his bike lost power going up hills, he said.

"He even indicated when going through stop signs," he said.

The unlicensed driver put himself and other road users at risk through his actions, and his motorcycle had been impounded, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

He has been charged with dangerous driving, in addition to failing to stop and driving while forbidden.

He is expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court next week.
