Teen’s future positive after Blue Light camp

A Dunedin teenager says Blue Light "opened doors" for his future, after winning an award at one of its life skills camps.

Scout Dunn (16) received the  overall excellence award recently at the five-day Blue Light Life Skills Camp in Burnham, Christchurch.Scout said he did not expect the award, but "felt like one of the leaders" at the camp.

"I got into a bit of strife at school which involved the police and they referred me to Blue Light."

The organisation "opened doors" for him, taught him discipline and he had now decided to join the New Zealand Army.

From 5.45am to 9.30pm each day the 27 young people were involved in activities such as confidence courses, high ropes and marching.

Blue Light Life Skills co-ordinator Amelia Adcock said Scout showed maturity, displayed positive qualities of leadership and was respectful towards staff and fellow course members.

The programme, run in partnership with the police and New Zealand Defence Force, aims to teach life skills and leadership to young people aged 14 to 17.
