This definitely won't be a case of ''you've lost those loving felines''.

About 50 cats, large and small, will be converging on Green Island from as far afield as Alexandra, Ashburton and Christchurch for the Southern Cross Cat Show, on Sunday.

The annual show will be run by the Southern Cross All Breeds Cat Club, at the Green Island Civic Hall, in Howden St.

The competing cats will include hairless Sphynx; giant Maine Coons, some with extra toes; curly-coated Devon Rex; Persians; exotics; British Shorthairs; Siamese; Birmans; Orientals; Bombays, Burmese and Toygers, the latter looking like miniature tigers.

As well as pedigree pets, some handsome moggies would also compete for awards, prizes and rosettes under the watchful eyes of four top New Zealand judges, club president Zena Pigden said.

Several new exhibitors will be trying their luck.

This year the cats will be judged, as usual, on their beauty but will also be able to try their luck on the afternoon agility circuit.

Exhibitors will have the chance to see how their cats handle walking the plank through a hoop, as well as jumps, a tunnel and weave poles.

Mrs Pigden said this was only the second time agility had been part of a show at the club, after a trial event last year.

''It's just for fun,'' she said.

''We don't expect the cats to be expert at agility or even to co-operate at all.

''But it should be entertaining to watch.''

The show will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm, and entry is $5 per adult, $2 for a child and $10 for a family.
