Mosgiel off-ramp safety improved

New rubber judder bars, kerbing, footpath and line-marking have been installed at the intersection of State Highway 87.

The work was done to create a ‘‘single approach’’, at a right angle, to Quarry Rd, NZ Transport Agency maintenance contract manager for Coastal Otago Rochelle Leach said.

The ‘‘splitter’’ island, which formed a left turn and straight lane, was removed, she said.

‘‘The need for this change was identified following concerns raised by public and community representatives requesting the intersection be reviewed.’’

The agency investigated and agreed when in the left-turn lane, drivers did not have a ‘‘satisfactory clear sight distance’’.

‘‘This meant they had to turn and make an effort to see back and around over their right shoulders.

‘‘The new layout vastly improves visibility for the driver and consequently the safety of pedestrians and other road users.’’

The rubber judder bars also allowed larger vehicles to manoeuvre through the intersection if they required a greater turning circle.

Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board chairwoman Joy Davis used the intersection on Monday and said it was much safer.

The community board initially raised concerns with the Dunedin City Council about the line of sight for motorists turning left into Mosgiel.

Council staff contacted NZTA about the issue in October 2017 and it was added to its 2018-19 budget in February 2018.

Mrs Davis thanked NZTA for listening to their concerns, and the contractors for doing a ‘‘good job’’.
