The message was clear - innovate or stagnate.

More than 30 business representatives were told to do just that at a "survive and thrive through innovation" workshop at the Dunedin Centre yesterday.

The workshop was hosted by TechNZ and the Dunedin City Council's economic development unit, and was aimed at helping businesses succeed despite the global economic downturn.

Eileen Basher, director of business investment at the Foundation for Research, Science, and Technology, which administers the TechNZ programme, said it was important for businesses to reassess their situation as many had yet to experience a recession.

Innovation was the key to prevent a business from stagnating, and there were several grants available which could help start research and development projects, she said.

The workshop was led by Ignition Partner Ltd executive director John Cunningham, of Auckland, and included presentations from Scott Technology Ltd, and Powerhouse Wind, both of Dunedin.
