Surfers unhurt in crash down bank

A group of surfers escaped unscathed after their car left the road and flew down a bank near Dunedin yesterday.

A police spokesman said they responded to a single-vehicle crash in Blueskin Road, Carey’s Bay, at 4.30pm yesterday.

One of the occupants, who asked to remain anonymous, said he and the three other occupants were driving up the hill when their vehicle slid off the road while turning a corner.

The car lost traction and "flipped down the hill", he said.

"The boys are just a bit shocked to be honest.

"Just a bit of a sore back, but nothing too serious."

Firefighters could be seen walking down the bank to retrieve surfboards and other surfing equipment from the crashed car.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Cory White said at the scene the group were on their way to the beach to go surfing when they came off the hill.

The car had dropped two or three metres down the bank and "nailed into the manuka tree".

One of the occupants was a bit emotionally upset, but all four occupants had walked away fine, DCFO White said.

Two fire trucks, one ambulance and a police car attended the scene.
