The pair, pictured on the Union Lawn, were among 1780 students to start summer school on Monday.
Mr Richard would begin his first year at the university by taking a summer school computing paper.
Mr Sharma had returned early ahead of his second semester at Otago to complete a chemistry paper.
Summer school classes will finish on February 17.
