A small group of Subaru car enthusiasts gathered in Dunedin for the inaugural Possum Bourne Memorial Drive on Saturday.

ClubSub South Island area representative Chris Morgan, of Dunedin, said about 15 enthusiasts from the lower South Island marked the fifth anniversary of New Zealand rally driver Possum Bourne's death by driving from Dunedin to the Cardrona Valley, near Wanaka.

Bourne was killed in the valley before the 2003 Race to the Sky hill climb.

Mr Morgan's interest in the marque, and Bourne, began when he was at Kings High School. Mr Morgan won a youth driver training scheme assessment, and first place was a ride with the rally star in a works WRX car.

The rally car he rode in nine years ago, now owned by Christchurch service centre owner and former Possum Bourne Motorsport mechanic Stuart Weeber, was at Saturday's event.

Mr Weeber saw the car advertised for sale in Paraguay, looking a bit worse for wear'' and "just had to have it back''.
