A new Dunedin inner-city music studio which opened this month plans to help compose musicians of the future.

The Blue Line Music Studio, in Filleul St, was established to develop the next wave of Dunedin talent by exposing young musicians to a professional recording studio environment, director Liz Conway said.

"It's about getting bands, school students and young musicians using the equipment and learning, so that when they get to the next level they know how to use it," she said.

"In many ways, we're trying to fill the hole beneath the [University of Otago music department's] Albany St Studio. The vision is to create a template which can help students, musicians and bands develop their skills and experience."

The facility has five music tutors, offering tuition in voice, guitar, piano and drums.

It has six dedicated instrument rooms with recording facilities and a silent "Jam Hub", which allows bands to play without making any noise.

"Bands can record projects and demo tracks, or they can just track their practices," Ms Conway said.

The studio would offer school holiday programmes in songwriting, performing, recording and sound engineering, and free workshops would regularly be held by local artists and recording engineers.
