Two Dunedin students gunning for the record for most grapes thrown into the mouth will test their mettle at a Guinness World Records event at the University of Otago later this year.

Otago University students Bryn Kerr, the thrower, and Laurie Evans, the catcher, hope to break the record of 86 grapes caught in a minute at an event being organised by the Otago University Students' Association, at which students will make at least 10 different world record attempts.

OUSA hopes to hold the event in July during re-orientation week and is asking students to come forward with record attempt ideas.

Mr Evans said the holder of the grape-catching record had about 400 records and a big part of the attempt was about breaking one of his records.

''We don't like it that he has broken all those records and we want to take some for ourselves.''

The pair were about to start practising each morning.

Mr Kerr said the record-holder had every reason to be worried.

''He is going to hear about us soon,'' he said.

OUSA administrative vice-president Zac Gawn, who is organising the event, encouraged students with other ideas to come forward.

The record for the longest hug - 24 hours and 33 minutes - and longest time a team of eight people jumped on a bouncy castle - 26 hours - are among other record-breaking attempts all but confirmed for the event.

Mr Gawn himself wanted to set a record for most Weet-Bix eaten, within a yet to be determined time limit.

It was hoped the event would be held during re-orientation week, but it could have to be later in the year.

''That's because the Guinness World Records people take quite a while to filter all the requests they get and they have got to send us the rules and other admin stuff,'' he said.

His goal was for at least one record to be broken on the day.

''I definitely want that one certificate there. If we do at least 10 attempts on the day we should come away with something.''
