Student jobs down 25%

The number of University of Otago students seeking work far outweighs the number of jobs available, figures from Student Job Search (SJS) show.

The figures for the year until the end of May show that while the amount of money earned by Otago students through SJS compared with last year has increased by 23% to almost $3 million, the number of students placed into work has fallen by a quarter, from 1973 last year to 1475 this year.

The number of new enrolments has increased by 32%, compared with last year.

Otago University Student's Association president Logan Edgar said the lack of jobs was of concern, especially when the Government was about to cut allowances to many students.

"This isn't a pretty picture for students looking for extra income while they study."
