Student hit by car critical but stable

A University of Otago student is in Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in North Dunedin early yesterday.

The man remained in a critical condition last night but was stable, Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

Police had earlier issued a plea trying to identify the man, with inquiries confirming he was a 19-year-old student.

The man's Wellington family had been being notified, he said.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Opoho and North Rds about 2.40am.

The driver of the car reported the incident to police and sought the immediate assistance of emergency services.

Police were still investigating the circumstances of the accident.
