The Otago Regional Council is seeking ideas from the Strath Taieri community and other interested people on the management of the Taieri River.
A river management strategy is being developed to help protect the recreational, cultural, and ecological values of the Taieri riverbed, and to contribute to the long-term sustainable use of the land bordering the river.
The strategy's focus is on the main stem of the Taieri River for the reach between Hyde and Matarae, but will also be relevant to some activities elsewhere in the catchment.
A public meeting will be held today from 6pm to 9pm at the Strath-Taieri Community Centre in Middlemarch, to gain feedback.
The strategy will outline objectives and actions intended to help achieve this goal by guiding work programmes, decision-making and activities involving the community and the council.
Council chairman Stephen Woodhead said incorporating local knowledge so the long-term management plan reflected community aspirations and values was ‘‘critical'', he said.
