Police were ''still following a number of lines of inquiry'' in relation to the threat which was anonymously posted on the online bulletin board 4chan last week, a Southern police spokesman said yesterday.
The threat - by someone who identified themselves as NZ Robot - was posted to bulletin board 4chan shortly before midnight last Monday, warning people to stay away from the university on Wednesday as the poster would carry out a shooting to rival the scale of Seung-Hui Cho.
Cho killed 32 students and teachers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the United States in 2007.
The police spokesman said the source of the threat and intentions of its poster were still under investigation by Dunedin police.
Staff from the high tech crime group in Wellington assisted Dunedin police with investigating the threat last week.
''We have spoken to a number of people that have given us information that we have followed up on,'' the spokesman said.
''We have exhausted some [leads], but we are still following others.''
Despite the dead ends, the Otago Daily Times understands Dunedin police have hopes of finding the social media user responsible for the post.
Police would continue to maintain a visible presence in North Dunedin and officers were still attending regular scheduled taskings in the area.
Anyone with information that can help should contact Dunedin police on 471-4800.
Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555-11.
