A group of Camp Quality volunteers from all across Otago and Southland walked laps of the world’s steepest street yesterday to allow children living with cancer to go to camp.

Regional manager of Camp Quality south, Barbara Robertson from Te Anau, said the children faced a big challenge, so they had to do something that was outside of their comfort zone.

"I hate hills and I hate exercise, so I thought I would find the biggest hill I could find and climb the thing," she said.

The volunteers walked laps of Baldwin St in Dunedin for two hours yesterday, starting at 10.30am.

By 11am volunteer Lynn Sinclair, from Oamaru, had already walked three laps, and said she was aiming to do seven more.

All together, the group did 29 laps of Baldwin St, with Ms reaching her goal of 10.

The group are fundraising to allow children living with cancer to go to a camp in Queenstown for a week.

Camp Quality, which is made up of volunteers, funds the trip for each child through donations.

Ms Robertson said the camp cost the group $1,750 for each child.

"The kids face the biggest challenge ever with their cancer journey, so [this] is about us raising funds so those kids can come to camp."

The children, who can be aged between five and 16, have a one-on-one companion for the seven days and do a wide range of activities.

The children and their families do not need to help pay for the camp, the group aimed to cover it all. All the money to run the camp comes from voluntary donations and support from groups like The Lions Club, The Rotary Club and other regional sponsorship.

The group needs to raise between $70-$80k for this year’s camp.

Camp Quality is running a Givealittle page to help support the children https://givealittle.co.nz/event/big-challenge-for-little-kids-2023
