Ray guns, steam-powered gadgets and time travel will be celebrated at a steampunk-themed carnival at the Dunedin Gasworks Museum this month.
The Dunedin Gasworks Guild of Gadgeteers Time Travellers Ball and Carnivale Day will be held at the gasworks on election day, September 20.
Gadgeteers member Simone Montgomery (a.k.a Countess Simona) said the evening would be a night of dancing and ''general frivolity and splendidness'' that would give people a chance to get a taste of what steampunk was.
Guests are invited to imagine they had travelled from another time, place or dimension, and come along suitably attired. There will be prizes on the night for best costumes and gadgets.
Steampunk is based on Victorian science fiction, where people used ray guns and were able to travel through space, or under the sea, while still in a steam-powered world.
'It's fun and it's very social,'' she said. The ball will be proceeded by a carnival day at the Gasworks where visitors would have the chance to dress up in steampunk clothes, and enjoy high tea.
All proceeds raised by the two events will go the gasworks museum.
