Allied Press has confirmed its regional broadcast television station, Channel 39, will close before the end of the year.
The South Island-owned publisher of the Otago Daily Times confirmed the news yesterday, with the proposal coming into effect on December 31.
The proposal was confirmed after a period of consultation with staff.
Allied Press chief executive Grant McKenzie said it was a tough decision, but a digitally led operating model would better accommodate changes in audience behaviour.
"We also accept the timing is not ideal at this time of year but will be supporting all our staff," he said.
Mr McKenzie said The South Today would continue online, and while there would no longer be a daily 20-minute news bulletin, news videos would continue to be posted on odt.co.nz and YouTube.
