An apparent drive-by shooting in St Clair this morning was a ''targeted incident'', police say, and there was no risk to the public.

A  spokesperson said police were called about 6am after shots - thought to have come a passing vehicle - were fired at a a Surrey St house.

The occupants of the house, who were home at the time, were not injured.

A spokeswoman said this afternoon police did not believe there was a wider risk to the public.

"It appears a targeted incident. Anyone who has witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area should contact police immediately."

A Surrey St resident, who did not want to be named, said she was woken by "four of five" gunshots in quick succession.

"I thought 'oh my gosh, is that fireworks?'" she said.

"It was a bit like crackers, I guess.

It was "shocking" and nothing like that had happened in the street in her memory, she said.

It must have been "quite frightening" for the people involved.

Together with recent reports of dairy robberies in Dunedin it appeared people were not safe anywhere, she said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw a vehicle that appeared out of place or travelling at speed in the area early this morning.

When did Surry Street become part of St Clair, growing up in Dunedin from the 70's to late 80's I always thought Surry Street was part of Forbury, boarding on South Dunedin / Caversham. Maybe a real estate grab to inflate prices.
