Roads are scheduled to reopen on July 17 and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Forbury, Bay View and Allandale Rds was planned to take place last year but was delayed because water mains and sewer lines needed be upgraded.
The roundabout’s shape was confirmed after a series of crashes from 2011 to 2015 and the new alignment was expected to be safer for motorists and pedestrians.

When seen from the air like that, and given the unusual nature of the intersection, the result is a pretty elegant and practical solution. It's essentially a stretched roundabout, not unlike some I've seen in Christchurch that work really well on odd shaped intersections.
It's unfortunate it's taken so long to put into place though.
Great, the aerial photo shows quite a problem. I can't believe what the planners and DCC come up with. It's as if we're being used as a social experiment for a primary school lesson. Two million dollars folks, that's right TWO MILLION dollars to create blind spots and tight turns......this is craziness at the highest level.
Then to top it off, the 10 year plan includes borrowing of millions and millions of $$$$ to fund more of this stupidity.
Now that the new "Chicane" is almost complete ... apart from the road being painted pretty colours and signage to go up that will cause all sorts of confusion, horn honking and road rage incidents.
My bet is, that it's just going to add to the congestion of vehicles at peak times, and make a damn good chicane for the boy racers at night ... until one hits it just right and rolls a car.
I will await forthcoming comments from the driving public and the Mayor (when he gets his learners licence) as to the effectiveness of this historical landmark of the future.
There will of course be a series of 8 high-altitude speed bumps around the peanut that will solve the boy-racer problem......or not.
How can this Council make such a shambles of what is a simple project?
This is a disgraceful waste of ratepayers money and offensive to the good folk who run (or are trying to) businesses in the area. Another shameful effort from the DCC Transport team
