Staying fit and healthy is the motivation behind a Pacific Trust Otago school holiday programme aimed at steering children away from the television and on to the sports court.

The charitable organisation held a two-day tournament at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin this week, comprising hundreds of children, teenagers and adults from the Pacific community.

Thursday's netball competition involved nine primary school teams, nine secondary school teams and eight adult teams.

Yesterday, a volleyball tournament attracted 16 teams of adults, 10 of secondary school-aged youth and eight of primary school children.

Most represented their church denominations but smaller Pacific groups such as Kiribati and Tuvalu formed national teams.

Pacific Trust Otago health promoter Finau Taungateau said the trust's theme for 2012 was fitness and wellbeing.

School holiday sports programmes had been organised throughout the year accordingly, she said.

"Maintaining healthy body weight is important for overall wellbeing. The tournament also builds our community as well, giving people something to look forward to and getting children away from television games and outside to be active," she said.

To encourage participation, a social category was open to those less fit or competitive.

"It's really about having a go and having fun," Mrs Taungateau said.
