Members of the public made a grim discovery at an infamous closed Dunedin mental hospital on Thursday.
Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said police were called to Truby King Reserve, near the closed Seacliff Asylum at 4.08pm yesterday after members of the public found what they believed to be an unmarked grave.
The pair found what appeared to be a femur bone and an old patient tag within the grounds.
The bone was seized by police for further examination.
It was found to be the remains of a dog, Sgt Lee said.
