Forget horses, swords and knights in shining armour. The story of King Arthur has been given a makeover by the Gang Show 2009 producers, leaving Arty and his gang of surly knights to go head-to-head on skateboards in jousts.

Co-producer Noel Walker said this year's show would be a "modern twist" on the well-known tales and would use music and dance from Hairspray, Rent, Billy Elliot and Shrek to give the comedy review a little extra spice.

Nearly 80 active Otago members of Scouts and Girl Guiding New Zealand, aged 10-21, will perform with a live band in the 27th Otago Gang Show, which runs at the Mayfair Theatre from July 7 to 10 (at 7.30pm) and July 11 (at 2pm and 7.30pm).

Mr Walker said the show was not held to to raise funds for scouts and guides, but rather, to provide them with an opportunity to participate in a show for their local communities.
