More than 200 bagpipers and dancers descended on Dunedin for the New Zealand Piping and Dancing championships on Queen's birthday weekend.

Otago Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association president Jane Wilson said the 103 pipers entered in the New Zealand solo piping championships was the most she could recall at any nationals.

Some had travelled from Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington to compete, Mrs Wilson said.

And 119 dancers performed in the University of Otago College of Education auditorium, too, she said.

Mrs Wilson expected about 350 people to watch the championships which were as popular as ever, she said.

''People enjoy it and get a lot of satisfaction from it because it takes practice and determination.''
