Solution to flooding

Reopening a Mosgiel intersection has been suggested as a way to solve flooding and traffic problems in the town's main retail area.

Two side streets, Glasgow and Lanark Sts, were closed five years ago and ‘‘pocket parks'' created as part of an upgrade of Mosgiel's main street, Gordon Rd.

But Gordon Rd shops have flooded or been threatened at least twice since after torrential downpours, and Mosgiel Taieri Community Board chairman Barry Barbour said yesterday reopening Lanark St to west-turning traffic might solve flooding problems by providing an alternative escape for excess stormwater in extreme weather.

Reopening part of the road would also be the easiest way of easing traffic congestion on Gordon Rd, he said.

Council roading manager Mike Costelloe said the suggestion was being considered as part of a wider investigation of flooding issues in the town.

Among other issues, Mr Barbour asked the council to fund better quality Christmas decorations throughout the city, including Mosgiel.

The community board also supported construction of a 25m-long swimming pool in Mosgiel which he said could be seen as an extension to Dunedin's Moana Pool.
