A military exercise in Dunedin ended prematurely for some personnel after heavy snow at Swampy Summit prevented them from continuing on Saturday.
About 130 New Zealand Army and Navy personnel were competing in the military's annual Twin Peaks Battle Tab - a 28km run with 10kg packs and weapons, from Booth Rd near the Pineapple Track to Swampy Summit and back.
The event was hosted by the 4th Battalion (Otago and Southland), and Lieutenant James Austin said most finished in good time.
However, 15 personnel had to be picked up and brought down off Swampy Summit about 2pm when heavy snow began to fall and they were unable to continue.
He said they were covered in snow and cold, but no-one was injured.
The event was held annually to foster rivalry between the units.
The quickest team completed the Twin Peaks in 3 hours and 45 minutes this year.
