But it was not a case of an extremely isolated snow shower but rather part of the set-up for the filming of the Hollywood horror film Black Christmas on the university's campus yesterday.
The university's gothic-style registry building was temporarily transformed into the fictional Hawthorne College.
Actors and crew could be seen shooting a scene in front of the building, while on the other side of the Water of Leith passers-by looked on.
More than 70 students have been cast to act as extras in the film and images from the filming will be used by the university for promotional purposes.
American film and television production company Blumhouse Productions is producing the film, which will be released in December by major movie studio Universal Pictures.
