That 1337 Team of Matt Madigan, Alex Poulin and Reuben Formston (all 17) won the overall title at the University of Otago, ahead of 14 other schools.
Each team had to identify a problem which could be solved, or business concept which could be developed, with the use of the technologies, before presenting their concept.
For their challenge, the Bayfield boys chose to tackle mobile technology and how it could be utilised.
They designed a smart-phone application concept called the "Regional Reporter" which would use both GPS and camera technology to send instant reports of vandalism to the council.
The application would also report blocked public toilets or broken pipes and would be prioritised in a council database.
The boys were surprised when they won because "there were a lot of good ideas going around", Matt said.
Each boy was awarded an external hard drive and certificate for their idea.
The school was "very proud" of the boys, Bayfield High School teacher Simon Guest said.
"What is particularly good is this idea is very feasible and it could be done. They could put it into action next year," he said.
