Slip still closing Mt Cargill Rd

Three days after heavy rain hit coastal Otago, Mt Cargill Rd remains closed because of a major landslip.

Dunedin City Council transportation operations senior contract supervisor Bruce Wood said the slip was situated near the old quarry, and several trucks and diggers had been working to clear the debris since Wednesday.

The slip was caused by heavy rain, which caused many slips, flooding and swollen rivers across the region.

In the 24 hours to 10am on Wednesday, 92mm of rain fell in Oamaru, 76mm fell in Waitati and 68mm in Dunedin.

Mr Wood said it was hoped one lane would be opened on the road by this morning, and it was expected the road would be fully open again by the end of today.

All other roads around Dunedin were open again.

While there were still minor slips on roads around Dunedin, none were blocking the road, and they would be cleaned up as the council's contractors came across them, he said.
