SJS earnings down

A downward trend in the amount of money Otago students are earning through Student Job Search (SJS) has continued.

The SJS figures for the year to the end of May showed the total amount earned by Otago students, at $2,957,454, was 7% down on the $2,751,560 earned at the same time last year. The total number of weeks worked, at 6390, was also down 7% on the same time last year.

Otago University Students' Association president Francisco Hernandez said the decline showed students did not have it easy.

''We realise times are tough for students. The job market is tough, and student support is being squeezed.

''That's why OUSA is doing our bit to help struggling students by making it cheaper for students to eat on campus by providing free student breakfasts during exams, $3 lunches and looking into cheap dinner deals,'' he said.
