Twenty-one Dunedin voices joined 76,000 worldwide in marking United Nation's International Peace Day yesterday.

Montessori pupils at Rotary Park School took part in the international event, which involved thousands of Montessori children from 34 countries singing a song about peace.

Parent Lisa Connelly-Oseki said the chain of singing began in New Zealand at 10.55am and continued around the world as time zones allowed.

Pupils also learnt to sign the lyrics to Light a Candle for Peace for Deaf Awareness Week.

The global event instilled Montessori belief in the idea children should have an "early understanding of things much larger than themselves", she said.

Teacher Donna Marr said the children also made pinwheels and wrote their understandings of peace and war on them.
