The Southern Sinfonia is off to school this week.
The sinfonia will perform at 15 Otago primary schools this week as part of its annual rural tour programme.
The tour had a focus on fun and interaction, sinfonia manager Philippa Harris said yesterday.
"It will be a mixture of well-known classics and lighter music. It's not so easy for people outside greater Dunedin to make it to concerts," she said.
"The reception we always get is fantastic. It's great to make classical music available to as many people as possible and, particularly, to introduce kids to orchestral instruments and music."
The sinfonia group features Sandra Crawshaw (violin and piano), Juno Pyun (violin), Charlotte Francis (violin), Hazel Nissen (oboe), Ralph Miller (trumpet) and Sam Vennell (double bass).
The sinfonia played at St Peter Chanel, Green Island and Waihola schools yesterday.
It will play at Elmgrove, Silverstream and Lee Stream today, Maheno, Weston and St Joseph's tomorrow, Flag Swamp, Karitane and Warrington on Thursday and St Leonards, St Joseph's and Purakaunui on Friday.
