Blossom at the intersection of Dunedin's Albany and George Sts show spring is just around the corner - but not before a final cold snap.
Parts of Otago including Cromwell and Alexandra reached 17degC on Monday, but the region would be taken back to winter before spring officially starts on Friday.
MetService meteorologist Angus Hines said a low pressure system off the east coast of the South Island could bring snow to the higher ranges in the region and drop balmy temperatures by several degrees in parts of Otago.
Such dramatic changes were typical of spring, Mr Hines said.
‘‘You will see a few warmer days but, given that it is spring and the weather is very changeable, you are going to be seeing a bit of a swing between the warmer temperatures, and then, as the wind goes to the south, back to those cold southerly temperatures.’’
Daylight saving starts on September 24.
