A car backfiring sparked an armed police callout and the closure of a Dunedin street this morning.

Police were alerted to reports of what sounded like gunshots in Mulford St, Concord, about 10.15am.

A spokeswoman said the Armed Offenders Squad was called in as a precaution.

She said the bangs appeared to have been a vehicle backfiring at a property.

Cordons had been stood down and police were speaking with the occupants.

No injuries were reported.
