Louise Nicolson has big plans for the future.

The 15-year-old Queen's High School pupil is pushing for the school to start recycling plastic.

''They're only doing paper,'' she said.

In addition to spearheading a recycling expansion, Louise will also represent her school in Rotorua next week as one of 50 ''young environmental leaders'' selected to attend the annual Sir Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeaders' Forum.

This year's forum will focus on water management.

''I'm hopefully going to get heaps out of it to bring back to Dunedin,'' she said.

''I didn't expect [to get chosen for the conference],'' she said.

''I was so excited.''

Louise said she would like to work in politics, focusing on environmental issues.

''In primary schools, you don't learn much [about the environment], and I think that it should be brought into the curriculum.''

For the time being, she is focusing her energies on Queen's High School, where her next project will be getting a community garden set up.
